Game Report: EPYSA Challenge Cup vs. Harleysville FC

You win some, you lose some.

ACU Maroon made the long trip out to Souderton High School for the final game of the group stage in this year's EPYSA Challenge Cup, against Harleysville FC. Both ACU and Harleysville had beaten the other two teams in the group, YMS and Lower Merion. Both ACU and Harleysville had come into this match with a +7 goal differential and identical numbers of goals for/against. The winner would advance to the quarterfinal round.

Maroon opened the match slowly and tentatively, looking a bit lost on the very large Souderton stadium turf field. Harry took an early shot on goal (4') on a free kick, and Ben got in for two more shots (11' and 15') a few minutes later. Harleysville had few chances in the first half to test ACU keeper Steven, who fended off two shots on goal for the half. BradDoug made his mark on the first half with some tough, physical play on the right side, and Harry drew a yellow card (18') for going up against the goalie for a 50/50 ball coming in on a free kick. For the most part, both teams were somewhat subdued in their attacks, and fairly evenly matched in conversions (3/12 ACU vs. 2/13 FCH). The match was scoreless at halftime.

Harleysville struck first blood in the 47th minute, on a free kick, sneaking the ball past ACU second half keeper Connor. With the game very tight up to that point, the Maroon men took a few minutes to recover their stride, knowing that the momentum had shifted in favor of Harleysville. Evan (42'), Ricky (53'), and Harry (42', 62') all took shots in the second half, but Harleysville was effective in shutting down the ACU forwards, and ACU struggled to find the right positioning of the mids and forwards on the vast Souderton field. When Harleysville landed a second goal in the 61st minute, walking it past the ACU keeper, the Maroon men were essentially done for the day. Final score Harleysville FC 2:0 AC United.

I'll post occasional updates this spring on Rock League action.
